This four-week beginner wheel class gives you more time to expand on your knowledge and practice new shapes and sizes, learn to trim, glaze and much more. Sip and spin with your friends in this fun, supportive, creative space! Space for eight, so plan accordingly.

Intro to Bonsai

Sunday, Oct. 19, 1 - 5pm

Discover the art of bonsai through this beginner/intermediate, all-inclusive workshop.

History, horticulture, pruning, wiring, potting, design, and maintenance will all be covered in this hands-on course.

Whether you're just starting out or have been an active practitioner looking for a refresher, this course will provide the fundamentals for both beginning or continuing your bonsai journey. Plant, pot, soil, wire, and instructional hand out are all included. Award-winning bonsai artist, Chris Schmuck of Ironwood Bonsai will lead the workshop.

Flower Arranging, 101: 

Saturday, Oct. 25, 1 - 3pm, $60

Just in time for the holidays, learn to create two floral arrangements to take home - one in silk, and one with fresh flowers and mixed media, including fresh fruit, Magnolia, bamboo, herbs, dried flowers and natural items. You will also get a "how to make a bow" demo using ribbon as well as paper and natural materials. Larry Vanover, a local artist and designer who has lived and worked in Tidewater for over 40 years, has created retail visuals and floral designs for major florists throughout the area, as well as taught art and sold art supplies at Hampton Roads Wholesale for many years.

All supplies are included in this fun-filled, easygoing and educational class, where you can create floral masterpieces with your friends in Phoebus.

Take a spin on the potter's wheel and dive into the world of pottery! In this engaging class, you’ll learn the basics of the potter's wheel. centering and opening the clay to make your first piece.. With a limited class size of just eight students, you'll receive personalized instruction and time to explore your artistic side.Plan for some fun and mess, and bring a friend to share the adventure. Sumi-e Workshop

with Mike Lane, Blue Heron

Experience this meditative artform and learn all the basics of Sumi-e, in tandem with the Blue Heron Society's member show in the gallery. The workshop will introduce you to the unique materials of Sumi-e (called the Four Treasures), show you some of the main techniques of sumi-e art, introduce bamboo and wild mum painting, with coaching as you go - then finally, elements of landscape painting will be demonstrated, with special emphasis on painting marshes, then everyone will be given a chance to practice.
 


Mike Lane is a native of the Virginia Coast and North Carolina's Outer Banks but lived and worked and studied art in China for many years.
His art applies traditional Asian ink & watercolor medium techniques to East-Coast American landscapes, flora, and fauna, and his work primarily focuses on what he calls “threshold” marsh spaces. For more information about Mike’s art visit his website at
